Welcome to the St-Luke Ottawa
Learning Commons Blog!
Well, as they say, "Better late than never". After a busy year here, in our new LC, I'm finally blogging. Bear with me while I learn this new tool and explore all the possibilities that come with it.
The 2013-2014 school year meant many changes for us here in the LC and the outcome was definitely positive. Our newly renovated space is bright and airy and can accommodate multiple classes quite comfortably. New lighting will be installed this summer and the old computer lab will be cleaned up and organized in the fall to accommodate another working area for students.
After spending several months at a "mobile check-out desk" (LOL) in the hallway I was more than happy to sit at my new circulation desk and greet students in a proper Learning Commons. How lovely to open the windows on a bright spring morning and feel the cool breeze. It was so nice to see how much the students welcomed the new space and how much they enjoy being in there, reading, chatting, checking the on-line OPAC, playing chess or finishing up some work.
I would to thank my Library Helpers for all their hard work in helping me get the LC unpacked and running smoothly. I could never have done it without you. I will miss my grade 6 helpers as they head off to St-Pat's in the fall but am grateful for the grade 4 and 5 helpers that remain committed to the task and will replace them in the coming year. To Mr. Kettles, you rock!! Thank you for all the times you had to deal with the contractor and the tradespeople, for the heavy lifting, moving, complaining, and cleaning. For your knowledge and wisdom, I am grateful:)
My hope is that the LC will see a steady stream of students and teachers all through the week. Naturally, I'd like to think that it's more fun when I'm there, but the space can and should be busy all the time.
My goal for this Blog, is to keep you posted on all thing "Learning Commons". I'll add websites, book reviews, links to interesting sites, events at the OPL, infographics, etc. If you have anything YOU would like to share, please bring it to my attention and I'll see that it's added here. I will be blogging during the summer months, as this is when I read the most. I'm hoping that I will receive many book reviews from our students when we return in the fall and I'd be more than happy to share them on the LC blog.
See you soon in another blog.
